Boat capsizes at Tillamook Bay, Ore.

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard has obtained video of the fishing vessel Network capsizing and striking the Tillamook Bay jetty Friday. The video was provided by Sherry Newman, a Coast Guard Citezen's Action Network (CAN) member. CAN is an organization consisting of residents who live near navigable waterways who volunteer to assist with Coast Guard missions by providing on scene observation. A Coast Guard 47-foot smallboat crew from Station Tillamook Bay, Ore., reported the capsizing of the 40-foot fishing vessel Network Friday at approximately 8:05 a.m., and immediately responded. There were three people on board the Network when it capsized. One of the three men managed to swim to shore and was taken to the hospital by fire crews from Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi, Ore. The search for the remaining two men was suspended Friday at 4:31 p.m. Coast Guard crews including two 47-foot motor lifeboat crews from Station Tillamook Bay, Ore., and three HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews from Air Station Astoria, Ore., searched 15 square miles for seven hours. Casualty and pollution investigators from Coast Guard Sector Portland were dispatched to Tillamook to investigate the capsizing and a sheen of diesel fuel that appeared in the water. It is estimated 400 gallons of fuel were on board the vessel. The Coast Guard advises all boaters to wear lifejackets whenever aboard a vessel. Lifejackets greatly improve the chances of survival of somebody stranded in the water. Pollution and casualty investigations into the incident are being conducted.
