SEATTLE— Pollution and casualty investigators from Coast Guard Sector Portland are responding to a serious marine incident involving a capsized fishing vessel near the north jetty at Tillamook, Ore.

Pollution investigators will investigate sheening that has been spotted near the area where the 42-foot crabbing vessel Network from Garibaldi, Ore., broke up after capsizing at approximately 7:42 a.m. It is estimated there were 400 gallons of diesel fuel on board. Computer modeling has indicated there will be minimal impact to the environment from the diesel spill.

The casualty investigator will interview the crew that made it to shore and all witnesses to determine all elements of the casualty and ensure required drug and alcohol testing is conducted.

A Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Tillamook Bay, Ore., reported the capsizing of the Network and immediately responded to the area. Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay confirmed there were three people on board the vessel.

One man wearing a lifejacket managed to swim to shore and was taken to the hospital in Tillamook by fire crews from Rockaway Beach, Ore., and Garibaldi.  The other two men are still in the water.

A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Astoria, Ore., and a second 47-foot smallboat crew from Tillamook Bay are searching.

Sea conditions in the area are reported to be at 11 feet.
