ASTORIA, Ore. — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Alert donated 1,415 pounds of food to the Astoria food bank Oct. 24 and 25. The donated food was collected for admission to the ships haunted tour held on both nights. Witches, clowns and other creatures haunted the ship during the two-night event.
"This year was a great success for the Alert and for Astoria's food bank," said Ensign Eric Laurel, Alert's Haunted Ship coordinator. "We all had a lot of fun, and you can bet next year it'll be even scarier."
The United States Coast Guard Cutter Alert is the last 210-foot medium endurance cutter constructed. The keel was laid on January 5, 1968 at the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay, Md. and was commissioned on Coast Guard Day, Aug. 4, 1969. Alert derives its name from the early 19th century sailing ship Alert, which served in the Revenue Cutter Service under George Washington. Alert has a long and distinguished record of Coast Guard service. Prior to being assigned the homeport of Astoria, Oregon, the cutter was stationed at the Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, NJ.
