MAN DIES WHEN MAKAH CANOE OVERTURNS, 12 OTHERS RESCUED
Photo and Video Available

A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted all six members of the vessel's crew from the shore

SEATTLE - A 55-year-old man was pronounced dead and two females and one male were taken to Olympic Memorial Hospital to be treated for hypothermia after a canoe overturned at Dungeness Spit near Sequim, Wa. today.

The crew of the Makah canoe was taking part in the 2006 Intertribal Canoe Journey when a combination of high winds and five to seven-foot seas caused the boat to overturn dumping them into the water.  Coast Guard Station Port Angeles received the call at around 5:47 p.m. and dispatched a 41-foot small response boat and an HH-65 helicopter to the scene.  None of the canoers were wearing life jackets.

The helicopter hoisted all six members of the vessel's crew from the shore in addition to a Clallam County Sheriff's Deputy who had gone to investigate, and seven members of another canoe that had beached nearby.  All of the canoers were taken to waiting EMS personnel.
